Does everyone even know what a retinol is? Okay, so here’s the breakdown: retinol is a type of vitamin A that promotes cellular turnover. What is cellular turnover, you ask? That’s the rate that your skin sheds dead cells. The older we get, the slower that process happens. If your skin isn’t turning over dead skin cells, then it isn’t going to be producing new healthy ones either. With the regular use of retinol we can prevent the skin from thinning as quickly, and help to thicken up that skin that has already thinned. It’s also keeping breakouts away; without retinol, a layer of dead skin cells starts to form over the face and sit there clogging pores. Using retinol, will keep that layer gone and allow the skin to breathe properly…breathing is good!

Okay, so how do we know what type of retinol to use? There are so many types out there and that question can be a little overwhelming. MY go to retinol is made by SkinMedica® because it uses something called Phyto-Shield, which allows it to be absorbed into the skin without irritating the surface. So many of my patients immediately go into a panic when I mention Retinol because of a horror story experience they had with Retin-A. Retin-A and Retinol, both being vitamin A, are two totally different formulations. Retin-A used to be the prescription that was being thrown out there for acne to help control oil production and clogged pores. It then became the gold standard for anti-aging because of the “cellular turnover” qualities. Problem is, if it’s controlling oil and a normal to dry skin type uses it, it just makes the skin flaky, red, and irritated. Who wants to be walking around everyday looking like they are a shedding snake?

SkinMedica® retinol is the best of both worlds. It’s not only prescription strength, but it shows the same results without the irritation. So, as soon as you are done here, pick yourself up and go pick up your Retinol… the golden gates are waiting!
